英文回答澳大利亚的象征代表性建筑
The Sydney Opera House is one of the most distinctive and famous 20th-century buildings, and one of the most famous performing arts venues in the world.
In the late 1940s, Eugene Goosens became conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He saw a need for a performing arts center in Australia. In 1955, a competition was held and Danish architect Join Utzon's design was picked out of more than 230 entries. Utzon's love of sailing and the influence of his father, who was a naval architect, contributed to many problems such as disagreements over interior designs, changes in building codes, and how to build its sphere-shape roof. When it finally opened in 1973, Queen Elizabeth led the televised ceremony, which included fireworks and a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. In 2004, the government decided to rebuild the interior of the Opera House so it would conform with Utzon's original design.
Situated on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, the building and its surroundings form an iconic Australian image. The Opera House covers 1.8 hectares of land, and offers 4.5 hectares of usable office space. It is 183 meters tall and about 120 meters wide at its widest point. It is supported on 580 concrete piers sunk up to 25 meters below sea level. It has about 1000 rooms, five theatres, five rehearsal studios, four restaurants, six bars and numerous souvenir shops.
In addition to hosting the many musical, dance, and theater companies from around the world that have come to perform here, the Opera House is home to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Opera Australia, the Australian Ballet, and the Sydney Theater. The federal government in Australia helps fund major ballet, opera, and theater companies, as well as symphony orchestras and the motion picture industry. This money also helps writers, painters, musicians, and composers.Besides all the wonderful performances over the years at the Sydney Opera House, some other exciting things have happened. In 1997, a French urban climber, Alain "Spiderman" Robert, using no safety devises, climbed the Opera House's outside wall using only his hands and feet. During the 2000 Summer Olympics, Australian swimmer Samantha Riley stood at the top of the Opera House waving the Olympic Torch.
