胡适接到这封信,知是一位卖芝麻饼的小贩,竟能在业余勤奋自修,精神可佩；问的又是胡博士最热中的英美政治问题,更觉十分高兴,便亲笔写了一封回信.信中说：你提出的问题太大,我很惭愧,我不能给你一个可以使我自己认为满意的解答,我只能说,你说的英国制度和美国制度其实没有什么大分别.你信上叙述的那个“杜鲁门没有带走一个人”的故事,也正和丘吉尔在1945年离开顿宁街10号时没有带走一个人,是一样的.
