A young boy with golden hair was lost .His name was Leonardo da Vinci.He came from an Italian village.His parents thought they would never see their son again.The men of the village went out to look for him.They were afraid he was lost in the mountains near the village.
At last Leonardo came back.His eyes showed that he was happy.He was smiling.
"My son,where have you been?"asked the father.His mother was crying."We thought you had fallen down the mountion."
"It was very nice,"said Leonardo.He was still smiling."Yes ,I did get lost and I came to a big,dark cave.Oh,how black it was!I was afraid because it was so dark.But I also knew that there must be some beautiful things hidden inside.I must go back there soon.I want to paint it just as black and beautiful as I saw it.Will you came with me,Father?"

Leonardo da Vinci was born to be a great painter.He loved the beautiful countryside near his home.He was out all the time looking at the sun and hills and mountains.He liked to be with people.He saw how their faces changed when they were happy or sad.He always painted what he saw.
He wanted to know more about painting.He asked his father to let him be the student of a great painter.But the answer was always no.His father thought that he should become a rich man.And most of Italy's painters were very poor.
Then Leonardo thought of an idea.He took a piece of wood to his room and painted it black.It was as dark as his mountain cave.
Leonardo never went back to that cave.He never saw what was inside.But he remembered that he was afraid when he saw it.So he added new colours to his painting.He added red,yellow,orange,and green.
Then he put the painting near the window and called his father.What the man saw made him afraid.
"Don't be afraid,Father ,"Laughed the boy."I painted it myself.And I know that I can do better work if you will only let me learn painting."
"Leonardo,your painting is good.But you must always try to do better,"his father told him."Yes,you may learn painting.You may become a great painter one day."
For the next fifty years da Vinci painter beautiful things.When he died some of his paintings were found unfinished.He had wanted to make each one better than before.
