Considering the result that having a ‘‘person to consult’’ was related to health satisfaction,a social network that provides
emotional support could be related to health.When asking
about the social network,a question about willingness
to become a member of an organization was not
asked in this survey.Thus further research is needed
on this question.
Putnam (1993) showed that social capital is indispensable
to the responsiveness and smooth functioning
of civic institutions.The mechanisms linking social
capital to health outcomes are not yet elucidated
(Kawachi,1999).Ample evidence suggests that
socially isolated individuals are at increased risk for
poor health outcomes because of their limited access
to resources such as medical care,information,and
emotional support (Berkman & Syme,1979).In the
present study,social capital has been discussed from
the viewpoints of social participation,social networks,
and general trust.The role of social structure and of culture
as determinants of social behavior has long been
debated.Since 1971,a cross-national comparative
study has been conducted by Hayashi and Kuroda
(1997).The focus of the cross-national survey was the
comparison of peoples’ social values and their thoughts
and feelings.Items on the questionnaire covered
cultural identity,socio-economic issues,interpersonal
relationships,leadership,religious attitudes,and social
values on science and technology,politics,social security,
freedom of speech,quality of life,health,etc.
Using these survey results,he and his colleagues
proposed some ideas of what in the Japanese culture
is similar to other countries (Hayashi,1996; Hayashi
& Kuroda,1997).Ethnic identity in particular is related
to the cultural characteristics of a group,that is,attitudes,
values,norms,beliefs and behavioral patterns.

Americans (Yamaoka,2006),a cross-national
