每代人都因为家庭纽带而聚在一起,但又因为语言
的差异和年龄的差距而彼此疏远.语言文化的差异
是两代人情感交流的一道无形的墙壁,阻隔了两代
人的交流与沟通.《喜福会》里的母亲们,
准确的汉语,也不会说准确的英语,只会说英汉结合
的语言.她们在用汉语说话的时候常常会冒出英
语,在用英语说话的时候又夹杂着汉语.她们的女
儿在美国长大、接受教育,会说流利的英语,尽管也
会说汉语,但是,在与自己的母亲进行交流时也存在
着一些困难.冲突与矛盾产生的主要原因在于,两
者的语言交流存在很大的差异.
表达情感的最重要的方式就是语言.在《喜福
会》中,由于母女之间没有相同文化背景的
语言,所以她们无法进行有效的情感交流.例如：当
蒋琳杜很自豪地对女儿提起她的家乡太原的时候,
女儿则认为母亲是在说台湾.“喂”,蒋琳杜大声喊
道,“我不是从台湾来的,我是在中国出生的,在太
原.”“噢,我以为你是在说台湾,这两个字发音差不

言的差异,母女之间的交流总是会存在很多的障碍.
久而久之,女儿会自觉地疏远母亲,母亲看到后又会
主动与女儿说话,女儿爱理不理的态度,让本来就很傲气的母亲很受伤,矛盾自然又会再次出现.中美
文化巨大的差异造成了母女对自我身份不同的认
同,这种认同最初是对立的,而语言成为了这种对立
的催化剂.中国文化-含蓄,间接的说话方式；美国文化-明确,直接的说话方式.中国人习惯用含蓄、间接的方式说话.当他们和别人交流的时候,即使没有特别的表达他们的意思,他们仍然能够能够同样轻易并清楚地理解对方.在交流过程中,中国人高度重谦逊,但事实上他们只是想引起别人的注意来同样表达自己的谦逊.与中国人相反,美国人喜欢用语言直接的表达自己的想法,他们希望别人能够快速、清楚地了解自己的意愿,因此,人们不需要花时间去通过动作、面部表情等猜测别人的想法.例如,按照中国文化的习惯,主人总要对自己做的菜贬低一番,然后期待客人品尝之后的赞扬,期望听到客人说"谁说这菜难吃,这是我吃过的最好的吃的菜了".美国人向来直率的表达自己的观点.中国的文化中,客人在主人家要客随主便,主人给倒酒才能喝,而不是自己想喝就倒着喝.客人即便是在看到自己喜欢吃的菜时,也不能在别人家里端起盘子往自己碗里拨菜,以此表示客人对主人的尊重.
