在这里我们可以看到,北川老县城以中间的湔江河道为界分为两个城区,对面是老城区,我们所站的地方是新城区,地震当天老城区背后的山体垮塌,将老城区房屋掩埋了三分之二,08年9月24号魏家沟爆发泥石流又将其掩埋了10多米,所以整个老城区我们现在看到的已经不到三分之一,震前在老城区山脚下有北川20多家机关单位和曲山小学,曲山幼儿园,在地震当天也都被整体掩埋在了下面,所以人员伤亡非常惨重,我们所熟悉的敬礼娃娃郎铮就是从对面老城区黄色碎片的位置救出来的,2008年5月13日清晨,在大地震过去十几个小时后,北川曲山幼儿园年仅3岁的小男孩郎铮被解放军战士救出.在四周还冒着烟的废墟上,这个左臂受伤的幼童躺在一块木板做成的临时担架上,吃力地扬起了他稚嫩的右手,向抬他的解放军叔叔敬礼,从此,这个小男孩有了一个新名字——“敬礼娃娃”,它也成了汶川大地震中,坚强、感恩的代名词.
面前大家看到这个河叫湔江,是北川人民的母亲河,也是唐家山堰塞湖的下游,唐家山堰塞湖在正前方向大山的背面,距县城直线距离3.2公里,现在为了保护老县城遗址,我们将河道的水改道,河道也正在进行各项治理工作.

北川是全国唯一的羌族自治县,地处四川盆地向藏东高原过渡的高山峡谷地带,有羌、藏.汉、回等17个世居民族,震前幅员面积2868平方公里,人口16.1万.
Beichuan is the only Qiang autonomous county in China. It is located in the zone of mountain and valley area to East Tibetan Plateau in Sichuan Basin. There are 17 nationalities such as Qiang, Tibetan, Han, Hui etc. which have been living here from ancient times. Before the earthquake, the county’s acreage is 2868 square kilometers with the population of 161000.

Beichuan was severely damaged during the May 12 earthquake in 2008. It is of the most victims, the most typical secondary disasters and the most economic losses. The total victims of all the Beichuan County are 20047 which is rated 29% of May 12 Wenchuan earthquakes. Among these victims, people who died in old town of the county reached to 11936. The direct economic losses of the county are as high as RMB58, 570,000,000 which is rated 7% of the total losses of this disaster. Why did the old town of Beichuan County suffer these giant losses? There are three main reasons. First, it is because of its geographic location. The old town of Beichuan County is located in the valley with mountains in both sides. Second, it is because the old town is in the fault zone of Longmen Mountain where is the earthquake high-risk area. Third, it is because the secondary disasters. Flood discharge of the June 10 barrier lake had an overall washout to the old town site and mud-rock flow of Sept. 24 had buried it again in whole.

From here we can see that the old town of Beichuan is divided into two parts by the river way of Qianjiang River. The opposite id old town and the place where we stand is the new town. By the day when the earthquake irrupted, there were landslide behind the old town and 2/3 of the houses were buried. It was buried again by 10 meters more in the day of Sept. 24, 2008, when the mud-rock flow irrupted in Weijiagou. So the old town which what we can see now is left less than 1/3. Before the earthquakes, there were more than 20 administration institutions of Beichuan County and a primary school and a kindergarten called Qushan Primary school and Qushan Kindergarten in the foot areas of the mountains of the old town. But they were all buried under the landslide. So the casualties were severely heavy. The salute-boy Lang Zheng whom we are familiar to was saved from the position marked with yellow scraps of the opposite old town. In the morning of May 13, 2008, after several hour of the earthquakes, the little boy who was only 3 of Qushan Kindergarten of Beichuan was saved by PLA. On the ruins where smokes came out from around, the little boy,who was injured at his left arm lied on a temporary stretcher which was made by wood plates, lifted his right hand with difficulty and made a salute to the PLA soldiers who were carrying him. From then, this little boy had a new name, the salute-boy. He had become the pronoun of strong and thanksgiving.

The river you have saw is called Qiangjiang River. It is the mother river of Beichuan people and the down stream of Tangjiashan barrier lake. Tangjiashan Barrier Lake is behind the mountain right ahead. The straight distance between the county and Tangjiashan Barrier Lake is 3.2 kilometers. In order to protect the relics of the old town, we have changed the river way. And some renew projects to the river way are now being performed
