In support of the transhipment and processing operations in Pohnpei,LTFV plans to deploy its 28 FSM flagged Ice/RSW fresh tuna longline fishing vessels along with 2 foreign contracted fresh tuna longliners.To supplement that fleet 12 purse seine units will also be based in Pohnpei.
These purse seine vessels will utilize Japanese style handling techniques to ensure that larger Yellowfin tuna caught is separated,frozen and stored properly in order to be used for freshfrozen value-added products.- Of the combined longline catch 50% will be exported G&G by air freight or sea-freight,while
44% will be processed in the plant.The remaining ‘Reject’ (inappropriate size and lower grade)
tuna will be exported frozen to Asian markets along with By-Catch.
The twelve purse seiner units are projected to contribute about 2,100 mt of Skipjack and 500 mt of Yellowfin Tuna each month for processing.The Skipjack will be processed through the loining plant or exported to overseas canneries by the purse seiner owners.Almost 60% of the yellowfin tuna is expected to be suitable for frozen value-added processing and the 300 mt of process grade tuna expected each month from the 12 purse seiners will contribute a significant 12% of expected fresh/frozen processed production.
The boats will pay the Transhipment Base enterprise a Cost-plus Agency fee (“toll-fee”) for services it requires including unloading and grading of fish at the dock for all the catch and for packing services,air freight and export sales costs for fish that is exported fresh in H&G or G&G form.
