“意”是人的一种心里活动,画面中的内容和形象能发人遐想,引人深思,打动人的情怀,具有一定的弦外之音,并能让人的视觉和灵魂共同振动,从中得到美的享受和精神上的满足.工笔花鸟画“意”的表现是历代以来人们思想感情的寄托,也就像是人的灵魂寄托一样.为了追求它,历代画家都多方面地做出了贡献.工笔花鸟画作为中国画的一个分支,经历了它的形成、成熟、兴盛以及衰败各个阶段,在这个过程中,“意”的表达源远流长.每幅成功的作品,都有“意”的完美表达,使得作品具有生命力,可以流芳百世.“意”是工笔花鸟画的灵魂.首先在第一章中提到“意”的内涵及来源；第二章提到“意”在工笔花鸟画中的表现；最后,在第三章中提到了“意”在工笔花鸟画中的重要性.通过对这三章的论述,阐明了工笔花鸟画有了“意”的存在,作品将会更加具有生命与活力.
