Before 1997,Pingyao in North China’s Shanxi Province was a quiet place with few visitors. Then,it was made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and everything changed.UNSECON said,“The Ancient City of Pingyao is an outstanding examples of a Han Chinese city of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.” This encouraged so many more tourists to come to Pingyao that its ticket sales for the historic places from 180,000 yuan in 1997 to 5 million yuan in 1998.
Lijiang,an ancient town in Yunnan Province,is the richest World Heritage place in China. In the year 2000,tourists spent 1.34 billion yuan there.
The great achievement of places like Pingyao and Lijiang caught everyone’s attention, and many other places made an effort to become World Heritage Sites. They want to encourage a lot more tourists to visit them. For example,in 1998,Luoyang City in North China’s Henan Province spent 150 million yuan on cleaning up the countryside in order to get on the World Heritage list.Old buildings were cleared away and trees and grass were planted around the well-known Longmen Grottos. These beautiful grottoes on the hillsides along the Yi River are considered to be one of the three greatest stone treasures in China.(The other two are the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang,Gansu Province and the Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi Province.) In the year 2000,Longmen Grottoes was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
UNESCO has a rule that each country can apply for only one place to become a World Heritage Site each year. This means that it will take a long time for all the places in China trying to become Heritage Sites to succeed, but local governments should protect the ancient sites and encourage visitors to come and see them.
